How We Are Making a Difference,

Meet Our New Cardiologist: Paul Jurgens, MD

board-certified cardiologist Dr. Paul Jurgens

At South Denver Cardiology, we know that successfully helping our patients depends on many factors, including having the right equipment, and, especially, having the right people. This is why weā€™re constantly adding new technology to our practice, as well as new cardiologists to our outstanding team.

We also know that itā€™s important for patients to get to know their treating doctors. This can help you feel more comfortable with them, which can help you get better cardiology care. Thatā€™s why weā€™re proud and happy to introduce a new cardiologist, Dr. Paul Jurgens, who joined our team just this summer (2021).

An Outstanding Education for a Heart Doctor

Dr. Jurgens studied exercise physiology at the University of Iowa, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Integrative Physiology. He then received his medical degree at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. He completed his internship and residency at the University of Coloradoā€™s Anschutz campus.

Dr. Jurgens completed a cardiovascular disease fellowship at the University of Minnesota, where he was awarded the Anthony L. Garafalo Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Award for his research in preventive cardiology.

Dr. Jurgens is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Echocardiography. He will be sitting for the board exam in Cardiovascular Disease and Nuclear Cardiology in the Fall of this year (2021).

Improving Our Approach to Customized Care

Dr. Jurgens specializes in treating complex lipid disorders such as hypercholesterolemia (high cholesterol) and hypertriglyceridemia (high triglycerides). These conditions can increase your risk of heart disease.

He has a special interest in personalized risk assessment, and prediction for heart and blood vessel diseases, such as heart attack, stroke, and heart failure. Risk assessment can be targeted at people with a known risk, such as having a family history of heart attack or stroke. However, the technique can also help people with an interest in improving their overall health and looking to reduce their risks. More information can drive informed decision-making.

Dr. Jurgens enjoys helping people prevent heart disease through lifestyle interventions, including promoting physical activity and dietary modification. He also likes individualized medical therapy, which helps people get customized treatment to improve their results.

In addition to these approaches, Dr. Jurgens is in charge of our cardiac rehabilitation program. He helps people who have had cardiac conditions to recover and restore their overall health.

Enjoying a Heart-Healthy Lifestyle

Paul grew up in Batavia, Illinois, and lived most of his life in the Midwest. When he did his residency at CU-Anschutz, he fell in love with Colorado. Thatā€™s why he and his wife are excited to return to Colorado.

Heart-healthy living isnā€™t just something he recommends to his patients, itā€™s something he practices himself. He and his wife enjoy activities like hiking and skiing. In addition, Paul has completed the Chicago Marathon.

Paul also enjoys playing the viola and is in search of a local quartet appropriate to his skill level.
