South Denver Cardiology Weighs In: Get Fit for the Slopes!

It’s almost that time of year again—time to hit the slopes! Whether you’re a skier or a snowboarder, with our perfect Colorado weather, blue skies, and powdery mountains, what could be better? With some time still to go before the start of prime ski season, you may be counting the days until you can strap on those skis again. However, there are things you can do to improve your performance on the slopes before the season starts! South Denver Cardiology weighs in on fitness tips to improve your ski season!
Avoid tiring out or straining your muscles with these tips to be at the top of your game this season!
- Cardio: Nothing beats cardiovascular exercise for whole-body benefits. Improve your lung function in the cold mountain air and stay energized longer when skiing by prepping for the season with some cardio workouts. Running, biking, and swimming can help get you in top shape for this season.
- Leg presses: Your legs do most of the work when skiing or boarding. Using weight training equipment, push a weight or resistance away from your body in order to improve your muscle strength, especially in your hamstrings. Make sure you use the correct amount of weight for your weight training experience level, and go to a gym to learn the best techniques.
- Tricep extensions: Your arms are critical when using polls on the slopes. Keep them strong by doing tricep extensions with a dumbbells regularly. Once again, make sure to work with the appropriate weight and use proper form to avoid injury.
- Core work: Your core keeps you steady while skiing, and strong abdominal muscles give you extra power and stability. Get your core in shape for the season ahead with crunches, planking, yoga, or pilates.
- Stretching: The more limber you are, the better. Avoid pulling a muscle by stretching not only before skiing, but daily to improve your flexibility.
It may seem like ski season is painfully far away, but it will be here before you know it! Have your best season ever by preparing ahead of time with ski-oriented workouts that will have you in good shape by the time you hit the slopes.
