Dr. Sri Sundaram’s Research Published in New England Journal of Medicine
South Denver Cardiology Associates is proud to announce that our cardiologist, Dr. Sri Sundaram, has recently been published in the New England Journal of Medicine for his contribution to the OPTION trial. This trial was also recently presented at the American Heart Association. This is a tremendous accomplishment for Dr. Sundaram and the entire South Denver Cardiology team, and it’s a testament to the impact of our research program.
Dr. Sundaram was one of the leading enrollers in the trial. He also contributed to the data analysis, the conclusions and the writing of the manuscript for the published study.
This is South Denver Cardiology’s third study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. For a private practice to have this many studies accepted for publication is truly outstanding, and it highlights the quality of the cardiologists and NPs we have at our clinic.
About the OPTION Trial
OPTION is a large, randomized trial of 1,600 patients in 10 countries that studied simultaneous atrial fibrillation (AFib) ablation and the use of a Watchman implant. The patients were followed for three years. The results showed that treatment with a left atrial appendage occlude device post AFib ablation were the same as taking blood thinners. These findings are groundbreaking because it changes post AFib ablation management for patients – they now have the option to either take blood thinners or get a left atrial appendage closure device.
The idea of getting a left atrial appendage occlude instead of taking blood thinners is novel and groundbreaking. For patients that can’t tolerate blood thinners, this is a very big deal. The Watchman implant is a common treatment provided by our Structural Heart Clinic, and it is one of the primary ways our clinic helps patients feel better and live longer.
