Dr. Amy Mertens was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan and obtained her undergraduate degree in English and Biology at The University of Michigan, graduating with Distinction. She also was a collegiate Varsity swim team member and received recognition as a USA Swimming Scholastic All American Team Member in addition to All American Consideration. She then received her medical degree at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, graduating in the top 10th percentile of her class and was elected to the Sigma Sigma Phi National Osteopathic Medical Honors Society. She completed her medical training including internal medicine residency, general cardiology fellowship, interventional cardiology fellowship, and advanced complex and higher risk/peripheral fellowship at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital. She joined Michigan Heart Cardiology after completion of her fellowship, then moved to Colorado in 2023 as an Associate Professor at the University of Colorado, working as an interventional cardiologist at Denver Health.  She then joined South Denver Cardiology in 2025 in order to pursue her professional passion for complex and high-risk coronary interventions, CTO PCI, cardiogenic shock and refractory angina. Dr. Mertens specializes in patients with microvascular angina (small vessel artery disease) and complex coronary artery disease. She particularly enjoys caring for patients who have been told there are no other options for them (including those with chronic total occlusions and bypass turndowns).

She is board certified in internal medicine, general cardiology, interventional cardiology, cardiovascular computed tomography, and echocardiography. She is also a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a Fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions. She has several peer reviewed manuscripts.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her two sons, yellow labrador retriever and husband. Her family has loved exploring the many areas that Colorado has to offer!
