South Denver Cardiology Reveals Five Great Things to Do With Pineapple
Our cardiologists at South Denver Cardiology love pineapples, both for their exotic taste and the nutritional benefits that accompany them. Pineapples contain considerable amounts of manganese, and vitamin C, as well as trace amounts of B vitamins. Moreover, pineapples are versatile, and can be used in a variety of ways in cooking. What’s more impressive is that only one state in the entire United States has the appropriate climate to cultivate pineapples: Hawaii. This tropical fruit is unique to regions closer to the equator, making it a prime export of countries like Brazil and Indonesia. Here’s a list of some creative methods to using pineapples in your next recipe.
1- As a marinade – It’s weird to think of a fruit juice being used as a marinade, but it turns out the unique flavor of pineapples allows it to complement the taste of meats very well, especially seafood. The flavor seeps nicely in meats, and the enzymes in pineapple juice tenderize meat thoroughly.
2- Grilled – Grills and fruits also rarely seem to mix, but as grills are fired on across the country this summer, you may want to consider trying it. Grilled pineapple still retains its impressively resilient sweet flavor, with the added characteristic of being charred and heated. This makes the pineapple have an intriguing flavor that can be enjoy by itself, or on skewers. You could even include it as a topping for a hamburger, which can give your burgers that Hawaiian taste to complete your next luau themed party.
3- Crushed Pineapple – Crushed pineapple is often used to add the pineapple flavor to such things as yogurts, jam, and ice cream. Pineapples contain significant amounts of juice, and you don’t want that juice to disappear while crushing the pineapple. Make sure you are crushing the pineapple in a container that allows you to preserve the juice, so that you may either add it to the gelatin substance you are creating, or use it in another creative fashion listed above.
4- Chopped – This is probably not surprising, as any fruit can be chopped. But pineapples can be chopped and added to an assortment of cuisines that you wouldn’t expect. For instance, we all know chopped pineapples are used as a pizza topping and salad ingredient, but did you know chopped pineapple also goes great in certain chili recipes? It can also be a fruity compliment to tropical rice dishes and a perfect add-on for tropical cocktails.
