Denver Cardiologists Give Tips On Being Prepared For a Doctor Visit

Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to get at least one routine check-up from your doctor every year. The practice is primarily preventive, with the intention of catching something before it gets out of hand, and thus, more expensive. You’ll also create a rapport between your doctor and build a trusting relationship. If you trust your doctor you will be more likely to listen, and vice versa. If the doctor trusts you, they will want to do everything in their power to make sure you are healthy. Our Denver cardiologists are just like this as well. A good way to forge that relationship is to make sure you are prepared for your doctor visits. Here are some tips for preparing for the doctor’s office:
1 – Health insurance – Having health insurance is important because it ensures that the doctors are being paid for their provided service, and ensures you get the treatment you need. While many people operate on the assumption that as long as they are healthy they don’t need it, you just never know what can happen in life. Men in their early 20’s have gotten heart attacks out of nowhere, cancer does not discriminate based on age, gender, or how healthy you are. You have one life, and having health insurance allows your doctor to run whatever tests they will need to run to keep you healthy.
2- Stay hydrated – You may think the whole point of going to the doctor is to see if your current lifestyle has been healthy or not, but being dehydrated before a doctor appointment can really mess with your visit. Just for your routine checkup, your blood pressure will be taken; and if you are dehydrated, your blood pressure will register as much lower than normal. Oxygenated blood is useful to doctors when taking blood tests. Water is essential for your body to operate at its normal state. Don’t go to the doctor feeling like you’ve been in the desert for 3 days.
3- Be prepared to tell the truth – This may seem like a given, but a recent survey has shown that 77% of doctors have found that one in four of their patients will lie to them. While we understand how discouraging it can be to tell your doctor you’ve had unprotected sex, not followed their diet guidelines, or anything else along those lines, keeping things from your doctors can be a very irresponsible practice. At the end of the day, doctors get into the profession to help people, and by being untruthful, you make it harder for them to do that. When your doctor asks you a question, answer it honestly, their job is to treat you, not judge you.
