Cardiologists List Five Hiking Destinations in Colorado

At South Denver Cardiology, we couldn’t be more excited for the warmer weather. Warmer weather means more opportunities to go hiking, and this is without a doubt the state for hiking. We couldn’t possibly list every single hiking opportunity in this great state, but there are a few we think everybody should check out, especially new residents.
1 – Mount Bierstadt – Located about an hour away from Denver, Mount Bierstadt is one of 53 fourteeners in Colorado, or mountains above 14,000 feet. While climbing a fourteener is no easy task, Mount Bierstadt is often considered one of the easier climbs as far as fourtneers go. If you want to get an amazing view of the Rocky Mountains, hiking to the peaks of one of these behemoths will surely get you a view to gloat over. Just be sure to be relatively in shape and to bring a lot of water for the trek.
2 – Staunton State Park – Noteworthy for being the newest state park in Colorado, Staunton Park is an odd gem. The longest hiking trail spans 4.5 miles, and reaches a gorgeous lake nestled at 10,000 feet. The park is brilliant to hike during the late spring and early summer because the vegetation begins to resemble that of the Pacific Northwest. The lush greenery makes this hike well worth the time, and its shorter distance means it can be accomplished in half of a day.
3 – The Flatirons – the symbols of Boulder, Colorado, the flatirons tower over the city at roughly 8,000 feet, with the base of all hiking trails at around 5,500 feet. Most hikes to the top span 1 to 4 miles, which isn’t terrible, although the amount you climb in that span can be a little overwhelming to those who aren’t accustomed to the altitude. There are many hikes around the amazing formation, from those taking you to the tops of each one, to other notable features like Royal Arch.
4 – Garden of the Gods – Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1971, the Garden of the Gods are truly a site to behold. Located west of Colorado Springs, these red rock formations extend for miles across a valley, and there are hiking trails throughout to explore.
5 – Roxborough State Park – Located just southwest of Denver along the foothills, Roxborough State Park is an amazing escape from the city. With its abundant wildlife, eye-opening red sandstone bluffs, and massive area, a day-trip at Roxborough can hardly seem enough. Moreover, this park has some of the best biking trails in Colorado, allowing you to rise and fall with the rolling foothills that permeate throughout the area.
