Beat Those Post-Holiday Blues!
When the holidays are over, winter seems to hit just a little bit harder. Cold weather, the jolt back to reality and work, and the end of the holiday season can bring on depression, which can negatively impact your heart health. It’s important to give yourself the right tools to beat those post-holiday blues. Here are some tips:
- Vitamin D: This vitamin, often called the “sunshine vitamin,” can really be lacking during these cold winter months. If you’ve been feeling down, get your levels checked, and if you’re low, try a supplement to help boost your vitamin D levels and improve your mood.
- Sun lamps: If you feel like the winter is getting to you, considering buying a sun lamp. The natural light effect of a sun lamp can help boost your mood and can help reduce Seasonal Affective Disorder symptoms.
- Spend time with loved ones: Make sure you aren’t feeling isolated during this time of year. Spend time with people you care about. Make plans on the weekends, and prioritize family dinners. Feeling close with those you love can make all the difference.
- Plan something to look forward to: The holidays are so exciting! Having family in town, going to parties, and enjoying the time off is what makes the season so special—and what it makes it so hard when it’s over. By making plans, you may feel less down after the fun of the season wears off.
- Get enough sleep: So it’s back at work after the holidays, and those early mornings can cut into your eight hours. But not getting enough rest can make you tired, irritable, and depressed. Prioritize getting enough sleep.
- Exercise: Even though it’s cold out, it’s important to stay active! Try signing up for a fitness class to making working out enjoyable and incorporate exercise into your life.
- Talk it out: If you just can’t shake your post-holiday sadness, talk to a friend or loved one, and consider making an appointment with a therapist or doctor.
Take care of yourself this winter! Your heart health can be impacted by many factors, and your mental health is one of them!
