How We Are Making a Difference,

Reversing Heart Disease

Reversing Heart Disease Doctor Dean Ornish

Many of you know that at South Denver Cardiology, we have a state-of-the-art cardiac rehabilitation clinic. However, we have some changes coming – all for the better. In October, our cardiac rehabilitation clinic will be the only Colorado cardiac clinic associated with Dr. Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease®, an intensive cardiac rehabilitation (ICR).

Doctor Dean Ornish – Reversing Heart Disease Program

Dr. Dean Ornish wrote the book, literally, on reversing heart disease and his programs are the first to be scientifically proven to undo heart disease. LIFE magazine named him one of the top 50 most influential figures of his generation and People magazine has recognized him as one the most interesting people of 1996. Today, Dr. Ornish regularly writes medical columns for Newsweek and Reader’s Digest in addition to being the Medical Editor for The Huffington Post. Dr. Ornish’s diet has been rated #1 for heart health by U.S. News & World Report every year since they started ranking healthy diets.

Being selected as Colorado’s exclusive cardiac rehabilitation clinic to feature Ornish Lifestyle Medicine™ is a great honor. The program is designed as a comprehensive lifestyle change that will help our patients reverse their heart disease. The Ornish team selected South Denver Cardiology for rapid deployment because we already have in place much of the foundation to support an ICR program.
Medicare and commercial payers across the county are now reimbursing for the Ornish Lifestyle Medicine Program under the benefit category of Intensive Cardiac Rehab. Patients who sign up for the program will come to the clinic two times a week for a four-hour program for a total of 72 hours (nine weeks). The program will include participation and education in exercise, stress management, group support, nutrition and cooking classes with our very own Dr. Collins. Unlike other programs that only deal with the effects of heart disease, this focuses on the root causes including how to eat well, move more, stress less and love more.
Participants are kept in a consistent and small group which helps encourage better support throughout the duration of the program. All the participants have a common goal of reversing their heart disease and improving their well-being. But, it also involves commitment outside of class days as the success of the program is about adopting healthy lifestyle changes.
